Luan Collisson is a Singapore trained teacher with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Geography from the National University of Singapore and post graduate qualification in Education from the National Institute of Education, part of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. In addition, Luan has completed the following Singapore Math training; “How to use the best strategies from SINGAPORE MATHEMATICS to strengthen your Math instructions (K–G6)”, “Singapore Math: Number Sense and Computation Strategies” and “Singapore Math Strategies: Model Drawing for Grade 1–6”. Luan began her teaching career at Hwa Chong Junior College; a premier college in Singapore where she taught “A” Level Economics.
As a mother of two young children, she also established and operated a playschool. Luan relocated to the United States in 2002 and was a substitute teacher at the Mukilteo and Everett school districts where she worked with students from elementary, middle, and high schools. Luan is passionate about educating young children as she believes that education is “the great equalizer of life’s choices” (John B Davis). As an educator, Luan is credited with “helping her students to think” and making her lessons “come alive”. Luan loves working with young children. As a mother, she appreciates how precocious and delightful they can be. As an educator, she believes that if young children are equipped with strong foundational knowledge of a subject, they will be able to experience the joy of learning more and taking on challenges. Luan also spent 15 years working in multinational corporations in the US and Asia. She assumed domestically, regionally and/or globally focused roles at Korn Ferry International, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Microsoft.
Luan is passionate about teaching Singapore Math to children and loves its focus on developing active (Math) thinkers and problem solvers while keeping the learning fun and interactive. She is “wowed” by the Singapore Math computational strategies and the methodical approach to develop strong Math foundation in young children. Her overwhelmingly positive experience with the curriculum increases her conviction that Singapore Math is the BEST at helping our young children love and master Math.
Lianne was born in Singapore and spent her early childhood in the country. She learnt Singapore Math in the schools there although it was just Maths to her. Lianne moved to the US when she was 12 and found the Math in her US school much easier. According to Lianne, her experience with Maths in Singapore helped her do well in Math in the US. Lianne has been involved in Singapore Maths Club since its inception in Summer 2014. She played a key role in helping to develop the materials for the center.
Lianne teaches classes in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2. She leads her own classes with the help of a Teacher Assistant and partners with other teachers in their classes as well. In addition to her hands-on experience in teaching Singapore Math, Lianne received her certifications in "Singapore Math: Number Sense & Computational Strategies" and "Singapore Math: Model Drawing for Grades 1 to 6". Lianne has a Juris Doctorate (JD) from Seattle University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communications from Washington State University. She decided to develop a career teaching Singapore Math to young children because she is a firm believer in the benefits of the Singapore Math curriculum, having seen first hand the positive impacts of the curriculum. Lianne also “finds it rewarding to work with young children and helping them develop their Math potential”.
Ariel has been with Singapore Math Club since its first year of operation. She assumes a variety of responsibilities and is a key member of the team. Ariel is very enthusiastic about the Singapore Math program and enjoys witnessing the benefits of the program first hand. She is impressed with the different computation and problem solving strategies introduced to the students. She enjoys introducing these strategies to students and showing them how Math strategies can “make learning Math so much easier” and less intimidating than most people think.
Ariel’s academic background is in Sociology. She also attended training in the teaching of Singapore Math and found her “on the job training” in teaching the subject invaluable. Ariel possesses a keen personal interest in the social development and learning of young children. She really enjoys working with young learners in small-group setting and appreciates the “hands-on” learning environment which the program provides. Ariel is a wonderful teacher who enjoys working with students at different grades. According to her, “it is gratifying to notice the development of these children’s thought processes and to witness their transformations into confident learners who are not afraid to think”. Being a visual learner herself, she especially appreciates the “concrete, pictorial and abstract” approach used in Singapore Math to teach abstract Math concepts to young leaners.
Ariel also like interacting with parents to answer questions about the program. She is patient and understands the importance of helping the children transition successfully to the program.
Marissa joined Singapore Math Club as Teaching Assistant in Feb 2017. She has an Associate’s degree with emphasis in Math and pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at the University of Washington for nearly 3 years before leaving for personal reasons. Marissa enjoys working with the students at Singapore Math Club. She appreciates the opportunity to work with her favorite subject i.e. Math every day and to share her love for Math with young learners.
