Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Singapore Math program follow the Math syllabus at my child’s school?
Our program is based on the Singapore Math taught in the US, supplemented by extensive materials from Singapore. It is unlikely that the program will closely follow the Math syllabus at your child’s school unless the school offers “Singapore Math” or “Math in Focus” as its Math curriculum. However, the Singapore Math curriculum emphasizes the Math skills recommended in the US Common Core State Standards. In fact, it meets &/or exceed the Common Core Standards because Singapore Math tends to progresses to Math topics at an earlier grade level compared to the US Standards.
Why would I enroll my child in your program if s/he is already learning Singapore Math at school?
If your child is learning Singapore Math at school, our program will reinforce what s/he is learning at school but in a smaller group setting with greater individual attention as well as more “hands on” activities and visual aids. In addition, we have extensive supplementary materials from Singapore which we have prepared for our students to provide them with more intensive review and practice. Your child will benefit from the reinforcement as well as the additional practice and homework.
Will the Singapore Math program interfere with my child’s learning of Math at school?
No, on the contrary, Singapore Math will enhance your child’s learning of Math at school by providing him/her with a deeper understanding of the relationships of numbers and other Mathematical concepts as well as by developing his/her problem solving and mental math skills. Singapore Math program is focused on building a strong Math foundation in every child. With a strong Math Foundation, your child will be able to better understand the Math he/she learns at school, making the subject more enjoyable and accessible to him/her. Singapore Math students also learn that there are different computation methods to solve Math problems, as long as they are mathematically sound. They are encouraged to share these computation methods in class. It is very likely that the computation methods that your child learns at his/her school are also included in the Singapore Math program. In our program, your child will have the opportunity to better understand the “Why” behind the methods he/she has learnt in school as well as the opportunity to learn additional computational strategies that will make solving Math problems easier and faster.
